Break your auto-pilot (fast)

I hate that little counter in one sec’s intervention. A number showing me my lacking self control, my undermined discipline; a horrendous picture of self defeat. Maybe you are like me (a little bit too dramatic, maybe?), or you came here calm and rational because because you’re wondering if one sec could be more effective for you?

Don’t worry — This article gives you six features to help you. These  small tweaks can make one sec much more effective.

Give It Time

Crazy high numbers can be normal in the first days, depending on your normal use.

In the beginning, your habits resist new friction. Stick with it — one sec works best over weeks, nudging you toward intentional decisions.

I was at 120, then after a week or two it dropped to around 50. Now, after using one sec for years, I’m usually between 3–20, depending on how my life and mood is going on.

Keep in mind: Behavior change takes time – and unforeseen (or even foreseen) circumstances can have and show an impact later on. So don’t Panic if you see a sudden rise: Maybe something changed in your environment.

Ask Yourself First

• How long have you been using one sec?

• Why do you open the app, and how do you use it?

• Did something change in your use or settings?

Knowing this helps you tailor interventions to your patterns.

Quick Tips to Make One Sec More Effective

1. Intentional App Switching

If you switch apps quickly, interventions can spike counts. Try turning this on to catch autopilot behavior.

2.  Adjust Intervention Length

Longer interventions create more friction, but too long can frustrate you. Experiment with the length — annoying enough to pause you, not to make you quit.

3. Mix Intervention Types

Try Mirror, Rotate Phone, Black Screen, or Follow the Dot to break autopilot.

4. Gradually Elongate Interventions

Make them slightly longer with each app attempt — slows down habitual openings naturally.

5. Schedule or Focus Filter

Skip interventions during planned and intentional use (work hours, evening routines). There is nothing wrong with intentionally wasting your time on the internet!

6. Extra Features

Use Intention Picker, Re-Intervention, or Healthy Alternatives to add friction and suggest other actions before opening the app.

Keep Going!

One sec has many tools. Try one or two tweaks each week and notice the difference. With a bit of customization, app openings drop, intentional use rises, and the app starts working for you, not against you.
